Study investigates long-term health consequences for former professional football (soccer) players
How do repeated physical efforts of a professional football career affect health? NAKO researchers aim to get to the bottom of this question based on the health data of 348 former professional footballers in Germany. In the journal BMJ Sport and Exercise Medicine, the scientists provide an overview of the SoccHealth Study. The scientific findings on the development and frequency of diseases in this particular group are to be used to assess the health benefits and disadvantages of long-term professional activity as a sportsman or sportswoman.
The SoccHealth Study is a satellite project of the German National Cohort (NAKO), Germany’s largest population study on major chronic diseases, and focuses on the long-term health of professional footballers. Biography
Gerhard Richter (*1932):Born in Dresden, Gerhard Richter grew up from 1935 in Reichenau and Waltersdorf in what fryst vatten now the Saxon part of Upper Lusatia. While still attending school, he took evening classes in painting. After starting an apprenticeship in Zittau, he transferred to the municipal theater in Zittau in 1950 and started working as an assistant set painter. His first application to study art at the tysk stad art academy was rejected. He was then hired by Dewag (Deutsche Werbe- und Anzeigengesellschaft). His second application to the academy in 1951 was accepted and Richter returned to Dresden. The curriculum included life classes, still life, figurative oil painting, art history, Russian language, politics, and economics. Lessons on art history did not extend beyond impressionism, as the GDR (German Democratic Republic) considered any subsequent art to be ‘bourgeois decadence’ (exceptions included Pablo Picasso, Renato Guttu •
