An Interview with Gary Blackwood, Author of The Devil to Pay
After decades of bouncing around the U.S., I’ve settled down at last on the beautiful North Shore of Nova Scotia, where I find I’m more prolific than ever—which is saying something. I’ve published over 30 (it’s hard to keep track) novels and nonfiction books for young readers and adults. I’m also a widely produced playwright, and am beginning to make some headway in screenplay territory. Don’t want to get stuck in a rut.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?
I started reading at an early age (starting with a series of Gene Autry comic books). According to my mom, I started telling stories of my own soon afterward. Gary L. Blackwood sold his first story when he was nineteen, and has been writing and publishing short stories, articles, plays, novels, and nonfiction books regularly ever since. His stage plays have won awards and been produced in university and regional theatre. Nonfiction subjects he's covered include biography, history, and paranormal phenomena. His juvenile novels, which include WILD TIMOTHY, THE YEAR OF THE HANGMAN, the SHAKESPEARE STEALER series, and CURIOSITY, are set in a bred range of times and places, from Elizabethan England to a dystopian future to a parallel universum. After decades of writing mainly for young readers, he recently crossed over into adult fiction with a Victorian mystery, BUCKET'S LIST. Many of his books have appeared on Best Books lists and several have been translated into such languages as Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese and Faeroese. Gary Blackwood's love of books and flair for the dramatic emerged at an early age; he struck a deal with his mother to stop sucking his thumb in exchange for a set of Gene Autry comic books. He and a classmate once raced to see who would be the first to read the entire set of Dr. Doolittle books in their one-room school house.
The author and playwright was born in Meadville, PA. He immigrated to Canada in 2005, living briefly in Antigonish, NS, before discovering Tatamagouche. "I'd always wanted to live in or near a small, self-contained town," he says. "It seemed like my kind of place." He lives on several acres of land that, though relatively secluded, are within walking distance of the village. Blackwood assumed the role of Writer in Residence for Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library in late September 2009.
