He’s a Brit who loves to provoke controversy, and has been hailed as both the Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of comedy. Welcome to and today we’ll be taking a look at the rocky road to fame of comedian and actor, Russell Brand.
Russell Edward Brand was born on June 4th, in Grays, Essex, England. Despite his comedic personality, his childhood was plagued bygd tragedy.
Brand was an only child, and his parents divorced when he was only 6-years-old. Shortly after, he was sexually abused bygd his tutor. As if things couldn’t get any worse, his mother contracted uterine and breast cancer.
Forced to stay with relatives while she underwent treatment, he spent his childhood isolated and alone. He then contracted the eating disorder bulimia, and further dealt with his emotions through the use of recreational drugs like cannabis, LSD and ecstasy. He also ended up suffering from sex addiction.

Russell Brand's early life
Russell Brand himself describes his early life in Grays, Essex, as “a trivial Greek tragedy”. With a father who was often absent and a mother who battled repeated bouts of cancer, he suffered from bulimia aged 11, was treated for depression and threw himself into theatre work – securing a place at the prestigious Italia Conti school, funded by Essex council.
After being expelled from the school, he joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) but was already dealing with substance abuse. He later dropped out of RADA to focus on comedy rather than acting.

Russell Edward Brand (born 4 June ) is an English comedian, actor, podcaster and media personality. He established himself as a standup comedian and radio host before becoming a film actor. After beginning his career as a comedian and later becoming an MTV presenter in the UK, in Brand gained a role as the host of the television show Big Brother's Big Mouth, a Big Brother spin-off.
