    The traveler Earl Lovelace began his journeys in Toco, Trinidad on July 13, Though he grew up in Trinidad, his travels began shortly after adolescence as he moved to the United States to study both at Howard University () and at Johns Hopkins (). Primarily he has followed the literary career--novelist, journalist, playwright and short-story writer--but in his time he has also served as a proofreader for the Trinidad Publishing Company, a forest ranger, and an agricultural assistant for the Jamaican Civil service.

    Lovelace has gained most praise for his novels, in which he presents people (generally in a Caribbean setting) striving for agency despite hostile forces of urbanization and neocolonalism.     Born in Toco, in north-east Trinidad, in , Earl Lovelace is the author of the novels While Gods Are Falling (), The Schoolmaster (), The Dragon Can’t Dance (), The Wine of Astonishment (), and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize–winning Salt (), as well as volumes of short fiction, plays, and essays. His long-awaited sixth novel, Is Just a Movie, was published in early The scholar Funso Aiyejina suggests that Lovelace’s books “speak of, to, and for those who are not usually the subjects in their own history . . . his vision, no matter how unique, echoes, clarifies, problematises, and extends folk preoccupations, wisdom, and philosophy.”
