Mañuel "Puntillita" Licea Lamot, who has died aged 73, was a Cuban singer whose life was transformed five years ago when he joined other elderly Cuban musicians and American guitarist Ry Cooder to form The Buena Vista Social Club, one of the most remarkable recording successes of the 90s.

If it had not been for their album - and the spin-off concerts and records that followed - "Puntillita" might have expected to spend his final years in retirement, honoured only by students of the history of Cuban music for his role as one of the great singers - the soneros - who worked with the Havana big bands back in the 40s and 50s. Instead, he found an international audience late in life, recording with other Buena Vista artists, and touring the world with their companion band, the Afro-Cuban All Stars. Now something of a world music veteran, Joachim Cooder  began to play drums at the age of five and studied world percussion at California Institute of the Arts. He was just 18 when he travelled to Havana in 1996 to play on the Buena Vista Social Club™ sessions. “He showed he has a real feel for Cuban music,” according to seasoned timbales player Amadito Valdés, who played alongside him in the percussion section. He has since participated in a wide number of other productions, performances and film scores, and has released a number of solo albums.
