Dr. Elangai Murugesu Vijayaretnam Naganathan was born on 31 January 1906, and he lived in his ancestral home in “Cankili Thoppu” in Nallur, Jaffna. Dr. E. M. V. Naganathan was a Member of Parliament for Nallur, (Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi - Federal Party), and was the son of Mr. Jebaratnam J. Hensman, former Registrar of the University of Madras in India. His sister Harriet Hensman married Walter Olagasekaram, DJ. They were from Jaffna, but had settled in South India, where they distinguished themselves in the educational field.

Uttam Kumar (born Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay; 3 September 1926 – 24 July 1980), widely known as Mahanayak (lit. 'Great Hero'),[1] was an Indian film actor, producer, director, screenwriter, composer, and playback singer who predominantly worked in Bengali cinema.[2] His career spanned three decades, from the late 1940s until his death in 1980.[3] Kumar is regarded as one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema and also the most popular and successful film star in Bengal.[4]
